It’s been a rough year to be a green thing around here. I got one batch of seeds started sort of on time but the rest were really late due to the accident. So, I have a few plants that are nice sizes and the rest are runts trying to catch up. Factor in the neglect and I have some rather pitiful-looking seedlings this year. I’ve murdered far, far more than usual but at least some have mostly survived. I have plenty of tomatoes leftover for the plant swap but no extra peppers.
(For those that have no clue what I’m talking about: There’s a bunch of Okie (and honorary Okie) gardeners that get together in the spring to swap plants, have a pot-luck lunch, and celebrate their obsession.)
For the swap, I’ll have available (what I don’t kill over the next few days) the following (pitiful-looking) tomatoes:
1 Beefmaster
1 Better Boy
4 Black Brandywine
2 Black from Tula
4 Black Krim
2 Bloody Butcher
2 Boxcar Willie
1 Brandyboy
5 Carbon
1 Celebrity
3 Cherokee Purple
2 Early Girl
2 Early Girl Improved
2 Estler’s Mortgage Lifter
2 German
2 Hillbilly
7 Mirabell
2 Neves Azorean Red
1 Pink Brandymaster
3 Pruden’s Purple
4 Taxi
3 Yellow Pear
In my kitchen garden, I have cages set up for 68 tomatoes. Should any tomatoes find their way home with me from the swap, I can always stick in another couple of cages here and there. I’m sure I’ll end up murdering a few of the 68 as I plant the, too.
2 Arkansas Traveler
2 Black Brandywine
5 Black Cherry
2 Black from Tula
2 Black Krim
2 Brandyboy
2 Carbon
2 Cherokee Purple
4 Chocolate Cherry
2 Estler’s Mortgage Lifter
2 Eva Purple Ball
2 Hawaiian Pineapple
2 Hungarian Italian Paste
2 Japanese Trifele Black
1 Jet Star
2 Mirabell Cherry
2 Mountain Princess
2 Neves Azorean Red
1 Peacevine Cherry
2 Pink Brandymaster
2 Porter
2 Porter Improved
2 Pruden’s Purple
2 Rutger’s
2 Rutger’s Select
2 Sheyenne
2 Sioux
2 Speckled Roman
3 Sun Cherry
2 Sungold
2 Ten Fingers of Naples
1 Yellow Pear
It’s terribly difficult narrowing down the grow-out list to just 68 but I’m trying to be practical. Toddlers + big gardens = not enough hours in the day. There’s always next year, right?
